Organizing Your Sewing and Craft Room

Lucky you, you have a sewing and craft room!  But if your craft room has a fabric monster living in it, you probably don’t consider yourself very lucky at all.  Time to tackle the big project of organizing your sewing and craft room.  Don’t know where to start?  No worries, we have excellent tips to help you get started and a wide variety of products to help you get the job done and get back to work in a stress-free and creative environment.

The first step to organizing your sewing and craft room is to take control of the space.  Designating specific spots for specific activities and giving those spots the right organization will keep you from losing the materials and ideas for one type of project in the pile of stuff for another.  Ask yourself, what is my craft room for?  What are projects that take the most space?  Sewing in one part of the room, scrapbooking in the opposite corner, and gift wrapping in another section is going to keep you more organized as you delve into projects.

The second step to organizing your sewing and craft room is to acquire the organizational materials and furniture you need.  Perhaps you already have several pieces that will work for different projects.  But if you don’t already have a sewing table or craft armoire, then it’s probably time to invest in one.  You’ll be glad you did when the projects get started and you can keep the organization going long term.

The third step to organizing your sewing and craft room is to come up with handy solutions to the small problems that plaque your daily work.  Are thing that don’t belong in the craft room somehow finding themselves there?  Designate a better spot for them in another room in your home. Are little scraps of paper and fabric getting in the way of the bigger stuff?  Invest in small organizational items such as boxes and bins to give everything a spot of its own.  Don’t leave anything to chance or you might not be able to keep it up!

Finally, once you have finished the major project of organizing your sewing and craft room, you might consider adding some decorative touches.  You can prompt the right kinds of inspiration in a colorful, personalized room a lot better than in one that is just plain and stark white.  Paint the walls your favorite colors, use your crafting skills to add extra touches to the paint job, hang your own art and projects on the wall, or have your kids help with the decorating job.  Your craft room will be the center of your home now!
